Drywood Termite Control

Drywood Termite Control

Drywood termites can be difficult to locate and control. Drywood termites do not live in the ground and do not create foraging tubes like subterranean termites. Their colonies are located in the wood they consume. This makes a surface treatment, such as a pesticide spray, ineffective for the control of drywood termites. At best, spraying the wood may temporarily deter termites from approaching the treated surface until the pesticide degrades and becomes ineffective. It won’t actually kill the termites. Injecting a liquid or foam pesticide into the wood is effective only if the location of the colony can be determined. This “spot treatment” is unlikely to be successful in all but the smallest infestations.

By the time you see any evidence, the termites have probably been there for years. The most obvious signs are piles of fecal pellets, wings, swarmers (reproductive termites with wings), or soft wood. Fecal pellets are hard and less than 1 millimeter in length and are the biproduct of the termite eating the wood. They can vary from light to dark in color.

Drywood termites can eat most types of untreated or poorly treated wood. Poorly treated wood is where the treatment process did not fully penetrate to the core of the wood. Potential sources of drywood termite colonies include:

    • Furniture
    • Cabinets
    • Doors
    • Shelves
    • Paneling
    • Window And Door Frames
    • Baseboards
    • Crown Moulding
    • Ceiling Beams
    • Flooring

The hot air exits our Thermokill™ heater at temperatures in excess of 140°F (60°C). The temperature is high enough to kill drywood termites, but without causing any structural damage to your property.

ThermoKill™ Drywood termite heat treatments comes with a 90 day warranty. If evidence of a drywood termite infestation is discovered (reoccurring frass droppings or live termites) in the treated area, we will retreat the infestation(s) with heat or other means to eliminate the infestation at no cost. Note: it is not uncommon for some frass to fall out of non-active galleries simply due to vibration of the galleries.
Low toxicity, residual pesticide applications are recommended as additional precaution to guard against re-infestation. Ocean Pest Control will extend our 90 day warranty to 1 year with a crawling insect pest control service agreement.
